Description
Our Mushroom Science Kits were the very first products developed by The Mushroom Conservatory and they’re at the heart of our mission to help people dive into the incredible things happening in the Fungi Kingdom and make it easy to start growing without any special equipment or prior knowledge. Created to share the thrill of scientific discovery with students, it continues to ignite curiosity and connect families to the hidden, fascinating world of mushrooms. This kit is designed for students of all ages
Each kit includes:
-
A liquid mushroom culture (choose your variety)
-
Step-by-step growing instructions and a lesson plan
-
Observation log for data collection and reflection
-
Vocabulary list and fungi-themed word search
Perfect for homeschool families, co-ops, science clubs, and classrooms, these kits make microbiology accessible, fascinating, and edible.
Gourmet Mushroom Varieties
Each culture produces delicious, forgiving varieties that thrive on common household materials:
-
Pink Oyster – Smoky and savory, often compared to bacon
-
Lion’s Mane – Mild with a crablike flavor and texture
-
Blue Oyster – Flavor between chicken and crab
-
Black Pearl Oyster – Deep umami with a gentle peppery note
-
King Oyster – Classic rich “mushroomy” taste
Easy Growing Methods
Grow mushrooms on:
-
Plain brown rice (great for younger learners)
-
Buckets of straw
-
Used coffee grounds
Each kit contains enough to start multiple small batches or up to five 5-gallon buckets. In addition to your kit, you’ll need some brown rice (precooked or cook your own and put it in a freezer bag) and some paper bandage tape.
If you’d like to grow larger quantities, you’ll also need a bucket and some straw, coffee grounds or cardboard.
Educational Focus
Students observe living biology in action: mycelial growth, decomposition, fruiting cycles, and environmental adaptation while developing vocabulary, data recording, and observation skills. Adaptable for ages 3 to 90+, this project offers meaningful scientific exploration with visible, rewarding results.
-
Cultures remain viable at room temperature for up to one year.
